Sarah Anne Johnson – Either Side of Eden
June 2 to August 19, 2006

Prodigious local talent Sarah Anne Johnson builds upon the success of her Tree Planting series with a cross-disciplinary project created in the Galapagos Islands. Known as the site of Charles Darwin's famed evolutionary research, today the Islands exist somewhere between romantic visions of paradise and difficult realities of deforestation and poverty. Within this divided territory Johnson simultaneously employs documentary reportage and constructed tableaux as she straddles both sides of "the ideal." Playfully mixing aesthetics of field studies, journalism, and classical composition, she assembles photographs, paintings, sculpture, drawing, and installation into a highly personal travelogue. The ensuing chapters conjure a historical fiction where facts, feelings, and fantasy bleed into one.
